Can DPM 2012SP1 backup a DPM 2012 R2 server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can DPM 2012 SP1 provide secondary protection for a DPM 2012R2 server?

We haven't upgraded to any of the R2 wave of System Center yet due to DPM having dropped support for Server 2003 and 2008.  If a 2012SP1 instance of DPM can backup DPM 2012R2, that would at least allow me to start the upgrade process, while the secondary dpm server could continue to act as disaster protection and also protect our servers that still run the older operating systems.

  • Hi,

Unfortunately not, both primary and secondary DPM servers must have matching versions.

FWIW - The DPM product group is considering adding Windows server 2003 back for a supported workload in DPM 2012 R2 and although it isn't supported officially, we don't block installing R2 agents on Windows 2008 servers.

  • I was afraid of that.  However, the bit about unofficial support for 2008 server and a potential for 2003 server to be supported in the future is good news.

If they do decide to add 2003 support at some point, is that something that could happen in a few months, or would it be end of this year or into next year before such an update could be released?

  • Hi,

Barring any unexpected roadblocks, I believe they are shooting for the next DPM 2012 R2 update rollup due out next quarter.
