Dynamic Distribution Group sending to remote routing addresses

    Question

  • Hello,

We have a hybrid Office365 environment and have setup a dynamic distribution group. Everything works but if we look into mail flow the email is being sent to both the primary email address and the remote routing address of users.

    Example:

    user1@domain.com - Delivered

    user1@domain.mail.onmicrosoft.com - Resolved

    user2@domain.com - Delivered

    user2@domain.mail.onmicrosoft.com - Resolved

    etc.

This is not the case with regular distribution groups, so my question is - is this normal for dynamic groups?

    Thank you!

    John P.

  • The contact is in the cloud or a mailbox is in the cloud?

When you're in hybrid, messages sent to a cloud recipient resolves to the tenant routing address, in your case, user1@domain.mail.onmicrosoft.com, routed to the cloud, and then the message gets delivered to the mailbox.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "Delivered" versus "Resolved".  Dynamic distribution groups are essentially an active directory query of objects, and mail to internal recipients wouldn't be routed to an SMTP address, but to the internal X.500 address (legacyExchangeDN).  You can look in your GAL to see if you have duplicate objects ("Get-Recipient User1" or something like that) such as having both a mailbox user and a contact for the same person.  You also didn't say whether this group is on premises or in the cloud.

  • Hello Ed,

Thank you for your reply. The "Delivered" and "Resolved" is the status I get in message trace. Maybe a screenshot would clarify things:

The group is on premise, and has a corresponding contact in the cloud.

    Regards,

    John P.
