Windows Defender Scan gets stuck RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been having problems with Windows Defender (in Windows 10) when running a quick scan.

The scan seems to 'get stuck' towards the end of the scan and the scan does not complete, no matter how long I wait.

The 'Time elapsed' and 'Items scanned' do not move forward.

If I then close Windows Defender, I can't bring it up again on the screen, either using the 'All Settings' or 'Control Panel'.

When that happens the only option is to reboot the computer.

    Is this a bug?

Or is there some malware or virus in the computer that stops the scan in its tracks?

However, another virus programme that I have now set as my main virus protection doesn't detect anything wrong and neither do Malwarebytes and HitmanPro malware.

Does this mean that I'm not protected by Windows Defender anymore?

I have switched to another virus protection for now and chosen the option to have periodic scans with Windows Defender.

    What should I do?
