2008R2 to 2012 Upgrade rewrite.dll failed to load. RRS feed

  • Question

  • After upgrading from 2008R2 to 2012 my IIS applications stop when accessing them.  I found the following errror in the event logs:

    Log Name:      Application
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-IIS-W3SVC-WP
    Date:          12/10/2012 11:05:09 AM
    Event ID:      2280
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          N/A
    Computer:      XXXXXXXXXX
Description: The Module DLL C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\rewrite.dll failed to load.  The data is the error.

If I repair the IIS URL Rewrite Module 2 in Control Panel everything works again.  Any idea what would be causing this?  Everything is working prior to the OS upgrade.

  • rewrite.dll was a downloaded add-on for IIS 7 and 7.5.  It could be that when you repair it, it goes out an picks up the rewrite.dll from 2012 (I'm just guessing).  You might want to take your question to the IIS folks over at iis.net.  They are the experts in all things IIS.

  • Exact same issue here and I have no idea what the guy below is talking about (downloaded add-on). Love to know if you found a solution.

  • Exactly the same problem here (currently upgrading 2008 R2 > 2012 R2 > 2016 > 2019), and running the repair worked a charm :-)

Leaving it to run a week as 2012 before getting another bottle of brandy and upgrading to 2016
