Why does RMS docx Prompt for a Microsoft (formerly Live) Account? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Why does RMS prompt an Azure AD rights-protected MS Word document consumer to supply a consumer Microsoft (Live) account?  (everything I read online says RMS doesn’t work with a consumer Microsoft account).

Details: When I attempt to open an Azure AD rights-protected document that I have sent to a personal email address on a home computer (Windows Vista/Office 2010), I am prompted for a consumer Microsoft (Live) account.  Is this the experience any user would have on a similar home device  – being prompted by RMS to supply credentials for a consumer Microsoft Account?  (The process eventually fails, even with valid consumer Microsoft account credentials).

This is a legacy feature called ILS that we are deprecating. You are correct that Microsoft Accounts (LiveID) do not yet work with Azure RMS. As soon as we enable MSA with Azure RMS, we will disable this service and provide a better error message to the end user if they are using older clients — such as Office 2010/Vista
