Having Trouble With Docking Station NIC & Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dell Precision M4500 PC which I purchased with a docking station for both business and personal use.  I need to set a static IP address on the docking station NIC and have a DHCP address on the laptop NIC.  Is there a way to add or clone an adapter in Windows 7 so that a static IP can be assigned to the docking station and leave the NIC on the laptop set for DHCP?

    Many thanks.

  • The docking station typically uses the Lan adapter. An Intel 825xx in the M4500. Set your router and Lan adapter for the static IP connection.

Do you have the docking module connected via ethernet cable to the router?

If you go wireless and undocked, you should then get the DHCP.

  • Hi,

You can assign an IP address to the Ethernet drop that you plug into the docking station at your access switch where it connects to the rest of the network.

In addition, you can set up a static IP address for a mobile system is to determine the MAC address of the adapter, and create a static entry in your DHCP server's configuration associating the MAC address with the static address. That way the client machine can be set to "obtain an IP address automatically", but it'll always get the same one when it's on your network. And if it's moved to another environment/different DHCP server, it won't need to be reconfigured.
