24 hour problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I feel that something is wrong with the 24 hours in Outlook. Maybe this is a general computer or a language (german) problem, I don't know...

I setup a fulltime appointment for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
    We 06.01.2010
    Thu 07.01.2010
The tooltip for this appointment show me We 00:00 - Fr 00:00.
It would be better if the tooltip would show We 00:00 - Thu 24:00 or -Thu 23:59h, but okay, it's a cosmetic problem.

Now I open this appointment again, and remowe the fulltime check mark,
    I get
    We 6.01.2010 9:00
    Fr 08.01.2010 09:30
for this both dropdown list. Okay, it would be better if Outlook would show the range from the fulltime appointment, but it's okay, I call this little cosmetic problem too.

    But now come the bug,
I was foolish and enter the time 24:00 in the dropdown box for the endtime and click on "save and close".
The tooltip show me We 9:00 - Fr 00:00 h
Even tough Oulook can't show 24:00 for tooltip, the result should be We 9:00 - Sa 00:00

In my opinion something is wrong here. If outlook can handle and display the 24:00 h value it should increase the day, but 24:00 is NOT EQUAL to 00:00.

I'm not expecting this to change, its been like this for 10 yrs. I often get complaints from new outlook users the first time they use a table view and see start today/end tomorrow and think its a 2 day appointment.

Now I open this appointment again, and remowe the fulltime check mark,
    I get
    We 6.01.2010 9:00

What value did you expect? 12AM? The behavior in Outlook has always been to drop to the start of your business day when switching from all day events to timed appointments. This is logical because many users stay in month view and click on a date to open an appointment form then remove the check from the all day box to make a timed appointment.

    But now come the bug,
I was foolish and enter the time 24:00 in the dropdown box for the endtime and click on "save and close".

I don't think this is a bug. When you enter a time in field, it only changes the time, not the date. It assumes that you want the date to remains the same. If you roll through the hours (use the down arrow key) it will move you into the next day.

  • Thanks for the answer.
2 +3 is now clear for me, but point 1) fulltime appointments ends 00:00h next day, is there any reason for this? Apart from that it works this way in all Outlook versions?
