  • Question

  • I've being using TB for many years managing at least 4 separate accounts some as POP3 other (most) as IMAP. I have also tens of folders where I move (by hand or through  rules) my emails. How can I migrate them to OutLook 2019 saving my folder architectures and receiving the emails in separare folders?

  • Hi,

Thunderbird uses MBOX format which is not supported in Outlook. So you need to look for some utilities to convert MBOX files to PST and then import into Outlook.

I doubt this Out of the box option would work for your case, there is no official recommended tool for this migration but you can try few 3rd party software to do this.

As you want to migrate from Thunderbird to Outlook 2019 you can go for a third-party tool

The below one claims that it can move all mailbox from Thunderbird to Outlook without losing any data properties and folder structure

    Hope this helps...

  • Hi,

I'm writing to see if the reply above is helpful to you. If yes, would you mind helping mark the reply as answer?

Currently, Microsoft doesn’t have official tools to move Thunderbird to Outlook. So you need to look for some utilities to convert MBOX files to PST and then import into Outlook.

  • Hii Thuyavan,

There are several methods to import Thunderbird to MS Outlook. You can perform this migration by using both manual and automated solutions. Here, you will learn a few possible solutions.

Solution 1: Import Thunderbird to Outlook through Gmail Account

Step 1: Add Your Gmail Account in Mozilla Thunderbird

    1.  First of all, log-in your Gmail account
    2. Then, click on Gear icon & open the Gmail settings
    3. Now, select Forwarding and POP/IMAP >> Enable IMAP option.
    4. Further, configure IMAP account & click on the Save Changes option.
    5. In this step, run Thunderbird and enter the name, email address, & password of Thunderbird account & click on Continue button to open it.
    6. Further, click on the IMAP checkbox & enter the all necessary incoming and outgoing information. Then, click on the Re-test button.
    7. Once you have filled in all the required information correctly, the task will be finished successfully. After that, select the Create a new Account option.
    8. At last, you can open any email message to verify your Gmail account in Thunderbird.

Step 2: Configure Microsoft Outlook to Your Gmail Account

    1.  First of all, open the File menu & click on the Add Account.
    2. After that, a dialog box will appear, choose Manually configure server settings or additional server types & click Next
    3. Then, click on the Internet Email >> Next button to proceed further.
    4. Enter the name, email address, & password in the dialog box.
    5. Select IMAP option for IMAP mail account from the Account Type option.
    6. Now, type imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com for Incoming and outgoing server respectively. Click on the More Settings
    7. Next, go to the Outgoing Server and select My Outgoing Server (SMTP).
    8. After that, click on the Use Same Settings As My Incoming Server option.
    9. Further, enter 993 port numbers under the Incoming Server Port
    10. Now, choose the This Server Requires an Encrypted Connection option.
    11. After that, enter 587 port number for outgoing server & click on OK button to exit the dialog box.
    12. To check the account setting click on the Test Account Setting option.
    13. When you get the message “your account settings are correct”. Then, click on the Next button.
    14. Finally, you can import Thunderbird MBOX files to Outlook 2016 easily.

Solution 2: Migrate Thunderbird to Outlook Using Drag-Drop Method

    1.  To start the procedure, run the Mozilla Thunderbird program.
    2. Then, open the messages folder that you want to export Thunderbird to outlook 2016.
    3. You can choose either single or entire message according to your requirement.
    4. Right-click on the selected messages and choose Save As option.
    5. Now, choose Select Folder and export the message.
    6. In this step, run the Microsoft Outlook 2016 program.
    7. Then, go to the menu & choose New Folder option.
    8. Provide a name to the folder according to your choice & click on OK button to create the new folder.
    9. Now, choose the newly created folder & select all the emails that you have exported from Thunderbird.
    10. Click and drag the emails to the middle pane of Microsoft Outlook 2016.
    11. Finally, all the Thunderbird emails will be imported into Outlook 2016.
