external Hard Drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In Windows 7, the "My Computer" item changes to "Computer", so please first make sure you clicked the correct item from Start Menu.

You can recreate this LNK file as below:

    1. Right click on blank area of Desktop and choose New -> Shortcut.

    2. Type the following location in: %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc /S and press Enter

    3. Type a name for this article such as Computer Management. Click Finish.

Copy this shortcut and paste to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools folder. Click Continue if you are prompted.

    Hope it  helps.

    Hi Good day.

I Did all the above to get my external hard drive going and the light on it came on. now it keeps on telling me to format the device. I find this Highly unnecessary because i took the hard drive out of my old computer 'which had the same windows on' just to get my old files back. Can anone please help me find an solution to this problem.

    kind regards

  • Hi Martin,

Sorry, I don't understand what's the relationship between "creating LNK file" and your issue. Could you give me more description?

Meanwhile, please insert your external drive into other computer for test and you'd better backup data firstly.

    Best regards,

Can you see the HD in BIOS?

Does it have a drive letter?

What symptoms were happening before the failure?
