Have Office 2016 - Can I use Project 365? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My son has Office 2016 on his laptop. He now needs Project for one of his classes.  Project 365 seems to be more economical for us - can he use Project 365 with Office 2016?

  • Project 365 is a misnomer.  See below for an explanation:

Office 365 - This is an online Office product offering much of the same functionality of Office 2016.  You get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Project Online - This is an add on to Office 365.  This is the online version of Project Server.  You most likely will not need this unless you are professionally managing multiple projects and portfolios.

Project Professional - This is the client based (runs on your computer) project management software Microsoft is most famous for.  This is most likely what your son needs.  This is often sold as an add on to Office 2016.  This can also be licensed in a month to month basis through Office 365 for $25 per month.

This means that Project Pro will work with the other applications in Office 2016.

    Hope this helps,

    Jim

  • You will not be able to use the locally installed Office with Project Pro for Office 365.
