SCCM Migration 2007 > 2012 - post migration... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey,

Just finished testing SCCM 2007 > 2012 migration in our testing environment. Other than failing to migrate anything OSD related (I ended up having to do this manually) 2012 migrated and is now functioning in our test environment.

I'm now looking to migrate our single site live environment. My question is this... I want to carryout the migration, however in the interim I'd like leave the 2007 site live whilst I make sure that everything is functioning correctly post migration (which I'm guessing will take some time) in the 2012 site. So if I carryout the migration in its entirety but don't push out the 2012 client to our workstation infrastructure, the 2007 client workstations will continue to use the 2007 site? Then if I want to test the 2012 site I can manually push the 2012 client to a select workstation - which I can use for test purposes? Once I'm satisfied that all packages, software updates, OSD etc is functioning correctly from 2012 - I remove the boundries on the 2007 site and enable client push in 2012...

Is the above feasible? Is there anything that I'm overlooking or should take into consideration. There's nothing in the above that would stop 2007 clients functioning with the 2007 site whilst I fine tune 2012?

Thanks for anyone that takes the time to read this!

  • Yes that can be done. Just make sure that there are no overlapping boundaries / groups for site assignment. It's ok to have overlapping boundaries / groups for content location though.

    Hey Torsten,

Thank you for your response. Greatly appreciated.

I'm a tiny bit unclear - could you please explain what you mean by overlapping boundaries / groups for site assignment? Are you saying that I shouldn't migrate the boundaries and boundary groups into 2012 as that would result in both 2007 and 2012 being setup with the same boundaries – thus overlapping?

    Apologies.

  • Overlapping boundaries = the same boundary exists in >= 2 ConfigMgr sites.
Boundaries in CM12 will only be functional if they were added to a boundary group. A boundary group can be configured for site assignment and/or content location in CM12. So you have to make sure that there are no overlapping AD sites / subnets / IP ranges for site assignment.

  • Awesome! :)

One last question - so in that case I can't setup boundaries for my 2012 site until I'm ready to migrate the remaining clients. Will I be able to carryout testing, for example - package distribution, software update deployment and OSD on my 2012 site without the presence of boundaries?

  • Hi,

If you do as Torsten wrote and configure a boundary + boundary Group and use it for content location only, then yes you can test every feature of ConfigMgr 2012, without any issues with the old SCCM 2007 environment. It is truly great!

  • Aghhhhhhhhh I think I understand now. Apologies - I'm not a little slow... it's just 2012 is completely new to me (I'm off on a 5 day 2012 Microsoft training course in January). So basically on the below tab, I leave site assignment unticked / unconfigured and content location configured whilst I carryout my testing and manually push the 2012 client to any test systems?

  • Hey - I've configured my 2012 site server as above.  However my two test workstations, once I've pushed the 2012 client which installs without issue, are unable to communicate with the site server. Within the client applet when I select "find site" (with the workstation already being assigned to the correct site code) I receive a message stating "configuration manager did not find a site to manage this client". Workstations have a status of client installed and inactive within Cm 2012.
