Perhaps my choice of words in the title doesn't best describe the problem.
I keep all of my music and pictures backed up on two network attached storage devices (NAS HD). One is an older SimpleShare unit and the other is a DNS-321.
With my previous laptop, a Dell m1330 running XP, these drives would spin down and hibernate. Meaning, the only time they spun-up was when I opened Picasa or tried to access one of the folders through Windows Explorer.
With my new laptop, a Dell XPS 13 running Windows 7, these drives are constantly active once they are mapped. Even if I am not personally accessing any information on the drives. Obviously, this uses additional power, but it also puts unnecessary
wear and tear on the drive.
Any thoughts on how I can resolve this?
Also, please note, that un-mapping the drives does seem to solve the problem. However, once un-mapped, I can no longer access those files through Picasa or my music program. The drive must remain mapped.
Thanks all-
