Project server 2010 does not send e-mail notifications when a resource is removed from a task - why not ? RRS feed

  • Question

  •  When de-allocating a non-generic resource from a task the individual does not receive any email notification. This could lead to engineers turning up to work they have not been allocated. If the task is deleted an email is sent.

  • You could create some customization within the SQL database to compare snapshots of the data and alert engineers when their assignments have changed.  I'd recommend weekly meetings to coordinate and having them regularly review their assignments in Project Server anyway.  E-mail is a poor substitute for project planning.

  • Actually we just want engineers (who are off site) to be notified of changes to their assignments.  These are daily assignments and when you say E-mail is a poor substitute for project planning, then I view the two things differently.  the e-mail notifications are there during execution and on our agile environment where things change quickly, e-mail notification of a change is an essential thing so that engineers don't turn up to the wrong site.   Its somewhat ironic that we are trying to use Project Server 2010 to improve our productivity and agility in this respect and whilst the notifications for assignment and modifications ARE automated, removal from an assigment is not - My belief is that Microsoft missed a trick here that significantly impacts the attraction of their product for companies like ours where we have service engineers and technical specialists working from home and they simply need to be notified of the job, where to go or more importantly if NOT to go as a result of some change in scenario.   Our planning is pretty good but we have a large number of projects and resources and this one piece of functionality remains missing from what would otherwise be a great product. Surely someone must have come up with this issue before ?  I am not a developer but would be interested to know of anyone who could provide this development for us. which seems to me pretty simple ?

  • Hi,

we have experienced the same issue and are using Allocatus Server (http://www.allocatus.com) for this purpose. It sends out an e-mail notification also if a resource is de-allocated from a task. You can also use this feature without using the Outlook/Notes Integration.
