Microsoft XP computer not loading after sign-in.. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have a pre-owned computer that was used at a college. It is a Dell running Microsoft XP Professional, and has no viruses. I was having a problem where it wouldn't let any account download, install, or access/write on the C: drive. I restarted it and put it into safe mode and changed the permissions on the drive (which were set for only administrator use){the admin account isn't used}). After i started the PC back up, it wouldn't load into any of the user accounts. It would only hang at "Loading your personal settings..." and it could sit there for hours without progress. Is there anyone who can help me? Thank you, and any help is appreciated.

  • reboot the machine, press F8 at the start up and enter the safe mode. If it enters the safe mode correctly and without any issues, reboot the machine and try logging in now....
