complex resource allocation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I am (using MS project 2013) and want to allocate say 5 hour each month to a task lasting over 12 months via a single task, and keep control of the total work (effort) on the task, using a single resource?  How do I do that and many thanks

  • Hi,

Is the workload equally sprend along the task? In case it is, you can simply create the task (might set it to fixed duration) and assign the resource with a certain unit. Basically, on a 180hr/month basis, 5hrs a month would be 3%. Then use the task usage or resource usage view to check the work by time period and adjust it if necessary.

If the 5hrs activity occurs every month as one shot at the same time, another way would be to create a recurring task of 5hrs on a monthly basis for 12 occurence.

That being said, note that it is not adviced to create such long tasks since it could impact the save and publish performance.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi - many thanks for your help - the work (5 hours)  is not spread evenly each month it happens at the end of each moth - a recurring task sounds a better option?

    Once again many thanks

  • Recurring task might be your solution. See this article. Otherwise the task usage view with a normal task could do the job.

    Hope this helps,
