Superscripts appear as subscripts in footnote references in Word 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I found the link below describing this issue being caused by the release of KB3178674.

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Superscripts-appear-as-subscripts-in-footnote-references-in-Word-2016-f85c5bc1-053b-4560-a439-03bcff4e169

Microsoft recommends not to un-install KB 3178674 and to wait for a new patch to come out.

Does anyone know when Microsoft will release the patch to fix this issue?

I have users waiting.   Thanks, Bob

  • For Office 2016 users who have the Click-to-Run version, the issue is fixed for:
    • subscribers in Version 1702 (Build 7870.2020) or later;
    • non-subscribers in build 16.0.7870.2020.
To get the update immediately, open any Office 2016 app and choose File > Account >Update Options > Update Now.

  • It's a volume license - version 16.0.4266.1001.  Need Microsoft to release new patch to fix this.

  • Any updates on the release date for the patch to fix this?

In Education, this is a busy time of the year with dissertations being submitted that frequently use Supersubscripts.

Should I look at uninstalling KB 3178674 or uninstalling Office 2016 and installing Office 2013?

Thanks for your replies and comments.  Bob

  • Hi Bob,

We are still working on a fix for volume license editions of Office 2016. Unfortunately, no release date for a fix could be provided at this point.

You can track the following article for the latest update of this issue, we will update this page as soon as we get a fix released:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Superscripts-appear-as-subscripts-in-footnote-references-in-Word-2016-f85c5bc1-053b-4560-a439-03bcff4e1696

It is recommended to not uninstall the faulty KB as it contains a fix for a security vulnerability. Reverting back to Office 2013 is a workaround if you are in urgent need of this feature.

Thanks a lot for your great understanding.
