phantom address list appearing in GAL but not in system manager RRS feed

  • Question

  • Exchange 2003 environment, single mailbox server + FE.

In Outlook, all users see an address list under All Address Lists that I cant find anywhere in the Exchange System Manager, under Recipients, All Address Lists. All other address lists (we have about 7 or so) do appear there.

When anyone selects this phantom list, outlook pops up a message "the  bookmark is not valid". All other lists work as expected.

Does anyone know where I can go to find this list and remove it. It is name =d "IS Test", so I suppose it was a departmental test list at one point, but no one knows who created it or when it was created, nor how it was created.

I want to clear this issue as a preparation before considering a 2010 tranisition.

  • Hi eChange,

Please do the Method 2: You cannot access the Default Global Address List Properties dialog box in the KB 286296

Unable to access the Default Global Address Lists container in Exchange System Manager

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286296

You should replace the "CN=Default Global Address List" to the phantom address list.

  • What I did was to get the dn of the parent object, then add the cn of the address list in question to the front of it.

Used dsacls with /A and I was able to view permissions. I then used the account that had full permissions to open adsiedit and I was able to see the object properly, whereupon I deleted it.

No issues, the entry was removed from the GAL.

  • I have found the list under Address Lists in adsiedit. However, it shows as having a blank Class (all other lists show Class as addressbookContainer), and I cant access its properties, it errors with "invalid directory pathname was specified".
