Server 2016 (MinShell/Core) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I just testing the new Windows Server 2016 without Dekstop Experience (final version).

    Therefore I have some question:

    - How is this Version of 2016 is called? I read something about Core Version and MinShell Version.
    What is the official name?

    - In the TechPreview it was possible to install the GUI on that version additionaly.
It seems that this is no longer possible. Is that right?
    (Referencce: https://4sysops.com/archives/how-to-install-the-gui-on-windows-server-2016/)

    Kind Regards

  • Hi,

the Sever 2016 has three variantes:

Server 2016 (in 2012 R2 called core vrsion)

    Server 2016 with Dekstop Experience

    Server 2016 nano

    - I'm not sure about naming of the first edition.

    - Also I want to test to convert the first one into the second one via powershell.

    Thanks for help.

  • Hi,

    Happy New Year.

    Very thanks for the link.

On it I found the following:

"On installation, Server 2016 offers two options: Windows Server 2016 (which is Server Core) and Windows Server 2016 Desktop Experience. Switching between these versions, as is available in Server 2012, is not supported (the possibility was removed in Technical Preview 3).
