  • Question

  • Hello,

We are using Windows 8.1 currently in a Fax Appliance. this used by medical and financial offices around the country.

We need to know if Windows 8.1 currently meets HIPAA standards for compliancy. We understand it is no longer in mainstream support, and exist now in a state of extended support and will be EOL by 2023.

If this product does not meet HIPAA compliance standards we need to know now.

    Thank you,

    Ron.

  • HI

for my researching ,as long as the security patches available under mainstream support or extended support are applied as required, Windows 8.1 users should not experience compliance issues. Meanwhile end users must pay for and license other types of updates to the product during the extended support phase. For this condition ,Windows 8.1 still can meet HIPAA Compliant, it’s EOL cycle will come in January 10 of 2023.

Mainstream Support: The period (usually five years) when Microsoft provides free updates, patches and fixes, including security and feature updates, to improve existing products.
Extended Support: The period (again usually five years) following mainstream support during which Microsoft continues to provide free security fixes. During the extended support phase users must pay for and license other types of updates to the product.
End of Support: The end of the pavement; users are on their own beyond this point, and can expect no more paid or free fixes or patches, either security or non-security.

As 2020 approaches, it’s important to know what software will no longer be HIPAA Compliant.
