    Dear all, good morning !

    I have successfully installed and configured my Hypervisor, at first I configured a few VMs with the Hyper-V MMC from another server and it works great.

    Then I tried to fid a more sophisticated tool in order to monitor a bit more the usage of my HDD, network and stuff... Therefore I installed VMM but I don't really see a big difference between the hyper-V MMC and VMM to be honest... and no tool for performance monitoring.

    So I keep on digging and now I am looking for Tools to monitor the overall performance of my hypervisor, including live HDD usage, networking usage, etc...

    Any advice on a tool that could help me ?

    vtCommander (http://vtcommander.com) provides local management GUI and monitoring functionality on free Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and Windows 2008 Server.Core.

    Well... I have a found a solution... unexpected one really but it seems to give some infos at least...

    I am using procexp from sysinternals that I launched from my command prompt under my free Hyper-V :)

    It gives the live usage at least but if you have a way to use perfmon on a hypervisor and/or answer my questions raised above I would still appreciate a lot :)

    you can get quite some information out of your server with using perfmon (winkey + r --> perfmon).

    some info on cpu measurement http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tvoellm/archive/2008/03/20/hyper-v-clocks-lie.aspx

    the counters for disks are at physical / logical drive, avg disk queue length is one of those who gives you an idea if you have i/o stress

    Ok but how do I enable perfmon on a Hypervisor like Hyper-V 2008R2 then ? There is no graphic way to do it and don't even know if it has the feature ??

    I tried to remote connect on my hypervisor from a Win7 machine and the first message I got is that the RPC service is not running on my hypervisor :-s

    what windows version are you running on your hyper-v host? core or full or the free hyper-v server?

    do you have a firewall between your windows 7 pc and that server?

    I am running the free hyper-v server ... wrong choice ?

    Should I go for the Core and use Hyper-V role within Core ?

    I thought that using a dedicated hypervisor (even if free) would be more optimal than using the Core + Hyper-V as there is one applicative layer (core server) more between the hardware and the Hypervisor ... wrong again ?

    Edit : And yes there is a Firewall but actually I double-checked, the RPC service is running fine on my hypervisor, there is just no perfmon.exe on it :-s

    Edit 2 : I turned my firewall Off on my hypervisor and when I try to connect on it using perfmon from another server it says there are wrong parameters... probably due to the fact that there is no perfmon on the hypervisor ?

    seems its not so easy on core (and i am not sure about the free hyper-v server, haven't used it yet (will see if i find something solid on perfmon and the free server).

    its not wrong to chose the free server or the core edition over the standard gui versions. both have their advantages, normal being easier management though potentially more downtime due to more patches (though i havent checked the real world implications, wether you start because of on patch or because of 5, its still the same downtime. not sure if there was amonth already where there was patches that affected only the gui version but none for core) and higher attack surface.
