  • Question

  • Hi All,

I am new to Visual Studio and I am not a developer in any means...I am a Network Engineer who needs help. I received a website from a friend of mine that actually develops but for me and him to get together are schedules seem to clash. He mentioned that I could change the content (Words, Pictures etc) using Visual Studio. The website was Developed using Visual Studio 2005 but I was provided with a copy of Visual Studio 2013.

    1. How would I go about editing the site pictures/Text etc

    2. I am not looking to re-size the site or change its layout.

    3. Will using Visual Studio 2013 create other problems etc.

    4. If anyone wants to see the site I can throw up my IIS VM

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Bill...

  • Hi,

I just want to replace the images, links wording etc

I am afraid that your issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses the usage issue of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System and Visual Studio Editor.

If you want to replace the images and links wording in the website using Visual Studio, please consult on ASP.NET forum: http://forums.asp.net/  for better solution and support.

    Best regards,

  • VS 2005 & 20013 are very different from each other.  Starting in VS 2008 and up the libraries are very similar and minor changes are required.  Trying to upgrade from VS 2005 and VS 2006 is much more difficult.  If you are not a programmer, than I would wait for your friend to get involved.

  • Let's say I had a copy of Visual Studio 2005, how would I go about the questions I asked?

  • It all depends on how the items were added to the project.  To find the old sections of the project I normally use the find tool to locate old object/text and set the find option to "current project".  I don't know if the pcitures are added as links or pasted as objects onto forms (or equivalent).

  • It just looks like you need to edit the HTML pages and you probably can use any HTML editor tool.  It doesn't have to be Visual Studio, although you can open an HTML file (not project) using the VS file open menu.  Do you know what HTML editor was used to create the HTML?

  • I think he said C-Sharp. He mentioned if I didn’t want to edit the page layout and just the naming, images etc I would use Visual Studio.

  • I don't know what links exists between the C# application and the webpage controls.  You don't need to modify C# if you don't modify any of the links.  You friend just said the same thing, but in reverse.

  • The VS application is looking a the tag names as the linking mechanism and as long as you don't modify the tags that the VS is using you should be ok.

  • If you are just changing the gif filename you should be able to edit the file and save it with the same name in the same folder without any problems.  Just don't change the tag names
