Appointment occurring in Recoverable Deleted Items every 30 seconds RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have never seen anything like this.

The user was unaware until they went to undelete an item in Outlook.

They notified me and I am astounded. Thousands on appointments are in recoverable deleted items.

I have gone into recoverable deleted items and manually deleted all the ones I could find. Once I have finished another 20 or so had appeared.

As I delete them 2 or 3 appear every minute.

Any ideas what I can check?

    Warm regards
    John

  • OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

    Sorry.

The appointment, when recovered, was created on 9th May 2016 and set for 17th May 2016.

Looking at all three people involved in this appointment (person who set it for the other two) the appointment was not there.

BUT checking a week later in one calendar - there is was.

I deleted this appointment and watched the recoverable deleted items.

No more recoverable appointments are being created.

I think someone must have deleted the original appointment and not the series and somehow this reoccurring appointment has been generating over and over for months.

    The issue is now resolved.

  • Hi John.

Do you mean Outlook automatically deletes appointments of the users?
Does this problem affect all users or only a particular one?

I checked the Recover deleted items in my Outlook 2016 but didn't notice the issue. Could you please collect the version of your Outlook then we can do further research on this?

Besides, please try to recover several appointments and then have a check in the Deleted Items folder to see if the deleted appointments have anything in common.

Any findings, please post back at ease.

    Best regards,
    Yuki Sun

  • This appointment does not exist in the mailbox that the recovereable deleted items exist.
It does not exist in the mailbox of the person who originally created the appointment.
It does not exist in the mailbox of the other attendee.

The appointment is appearing every 30 seconds or so.

Using Powershell to count recoverable items (as below shows) the items being generated. This command was performed twice, roughly 5 seconds apart.

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity "thisuser" -FolderScope RecoverableItems | fl ItemsInFolderAndSu
    bfolders

    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 175703
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 21768
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity "thisuser" -FolderScope RecoverableItems | fl ItemsInFolderAndSu
    bfolders

    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 175707
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 21770
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0

If I perform the same command 5 minutes later this is the result

    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 175775
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 21804
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0
    ItemsInFolderAndSubfolders : 0

If I check mailboxstatistics the largest folder is

    Identity : 329517\Recoverable Items
    FolderPath : /Recoverable Items
    FolderSize : 504.5 MB (529,020,669 bytes)
    ItemsInFolder : 153979
    OldestItemReceivedDate : 22/11/2010 08:52:42

    30 seconds later:

    Identity : 329517\Recoverable Items
    FolderPath : /Recoverable Items
    FolderSize : 504.5 MB (529,034,089 bytes)
    ItemsInFolder : 153983
    OldestItemReceivedDate : 22/11/2010 08:52:42
    2

I have moved the mailbox to another database and the recoverable deleted items is still being generated.
(sometimes moving mailbox can clear up odd corruption).

I have moved the mailbox of the person who setup the appointment originally (in case their mailbox was corrupt and causing this issue).

The version of Outlook is 2016 MSO (16.0.4591.1000) 32 bit

I think I'll try to find the GUID of the appointment and try to delete it via PowerShell

    It's an odd one.

I have also asked the user to recreate their "Mail (32-bit)"  profile - but she's away from work. But I also think her PC is turned off.

She has an iPad, but according to ECP it's not been synced since December 2017 and the issue is occurring now.
