Outlook 2010 - (1) Cannot open this item (2) The operation failed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

A user keeps getting the following 2 errors when she is reading / deleting / archiving emails.

    (a)  Cannot open this item

    (b)  The operation failed.  The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error.  If the problem persists, restart Outlook.

We are using Outlook 2010 (32 bits) connecting to Exchange 2010.

    Needs help urgently.  Thanks

  • Hi,

Does this error continue if we try starting Outlook in safe mode? Press Win+R to open the Run command, type outlook /safe and press Enter.

You may also consider to recreate the OST file to see whether it helps. To do this, exit Outlook, find the OST file, rename it by appending .old to it. Then restart Outlook, a new OST file will be synced from the server.

If above doesn't help, also try with a new Outlook mail profile. For your convenience: Create an Outlook profile.

  • Hi Steve

Thanks.  We have tried to create new Outlook profile, but the user is still getting the same errors.
