When to configure coex/hybrid with Office 365? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are currently in a pilot with Exchange Online and will be migrate users during a 12 week period.

As of now we will not be moving our Lync users to Skype for business online but I have some questions regarding this:

    - we must configure the Lync environment for hybrid usage right? even though we will home all users on-prem right now?

    - we must configure coexistence with Exchange Online to be able to see presence free/busy etc correct?

    - when is the best way of configure this coex? If we configure this right now it will work for users that have been migrated to Exchange Online but not for the on-premises Exchange users right? And if configure coex in 6 weeks this presence etc will work for 50% of the users? since we cannot get both exchange on-prem and exchange online to work at the same time with lync on prem right?

    - what else than presence and free/busy will impact the end users?

    thanks!

  • Hi zid,

Q: we must configure the Lync environment for hybrid usage right? even though we will home all users on-prem right now?
A: if all Lync users are on-premise, you needn’t to configure hybrid for Lync environment.

Q: we must configure coexistence with Exchange Online to be able to see presence free/busy etc correct?
A: if all Exchange mailboxes are migrated to Exchange online and all Lync users are on-premise, you needn’t to be coexisted with Exchange online, because you configure on-premise Lync integrate with Exchange online.

Q: when is the best way of configure this coex? If we configure this right now it will work for users that have been migrated to Exchange Online but not for the on-premises Exchange users right? And if configure coex in 6 weeks this presence etc will work for 50% of the users? since we cannot get both exchange on-prem and exchange online to work at the same time with lync on prem right?
A: To this issue, we suggest you move on-premise Lync(Exchange) to Office 365, then migrate another(Lync/Exchange) to Office 365, not only migrate Lync, but also migrate Exchange, you should create Exchange(Lync) hybrid.

Q: what else than presence and free/busy will impact the end users?
A: you could refer to Q2 and Q3 with my replies, and there are no other to be considered.
