please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Every time I shut down I get the message, "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 2."   I want the updates but it shouldn't be doing this EVERY time I shut down. I see an exclamation point shield to the left on the shut down button.  It takes a few minutes for the exclamation point to appear but it always does.

Also, when I view my update history, it shows that the status of "Security Update for Microsoft Works 9 (KB2431831)" and "Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 System (KB2288931)" are both failed always but the status for "Definition Update for Windows Defender-KB915597 (Definition 1.95.3177.0)" is successful always.

Any advice on how to fix this?

Have you modified the WinSxS folder? Which Security Suite (AV tools/Firewall) do you use? maybe it blocks some operations inside the WinSxS folder. Exclude the WinSxS fodler from your AV tool.

  • When this happens everytime, the updates fail to install correctly.

to see the cause of failures of Windows 7 updates, we must look for error messages in the file CBS.log.

Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy the file "CBS.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it) and upload the complete CBS.log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

  • I AM able to manually install the updates by going to Windows Update, so apparently the problem lies only with the "automatic" update process.  However it would still be nice to fix it.  I've uploaded my CBS.log to the skydrive.  I hope I did it correctly and that I have the proper link.  Let me know if I screwed it up. Here's the link:

  • I'm having the same problem with the installation 1 of 1.  I too have opened the CBS folder and got a surprise.  There are 5 cbs persist RAR files.  There is a file titled "filter list" below these 5 rar files.  I'll upload the cbs file.  Hopefully you can help me too.  Otherwise I'm planning on doing a complete system recovery on my machine.  Thanks in advance for your help!
