backing up a workgroup computer dpm 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • we have our dpm server dpm.domain.int, we need to be able to backup workgroup laptops that will be on the same subnet.

I have followed the directions here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff634193.aspx

I have have manually installed the agent and ran

SetDpmServer.exe -dpmServerName dpm -isNonDomainServer -userName DPMAgent

I have edited the hostfile on the dpm server and laptop and they are able to ping eachother and see shares on eachother.

i have attached the agent in dpm fine, doing refresh info it shows ok for agent status and workgroup for the domain. when i try and create a new server protection group and add the laptop to it we are good. when i try and create a client protection group and add the laptop I get an error, failed to add machines, in the error link I see
Following machines are not found in AD: and the hostname of the laptop.

    any ideas?

    Thanks

    Matt

  • Hey,

This article outlines that client protection in workgroup/untrusted domain is not supported (see the part of the restrictions)

  • What it means is FileSystem as a datasource can be protected from All server and Client SKUs, which in essence is difference from ClientDatasource.

DPM treat Filesystem and ClientDatasource as different workload/type(hence a special PG for clients)

    thanks,

  • I'm going to guess that the workgroup/untrusted domain ability only applies to server protection, not client protection.

  • DMPv3 Operations Guide, page 240 "Managing Protected Computers in Workgroups and Untrusted Domains" states:

Supported Scenarios - Files – Basic - All server and client SKUs for Workgroup and Untrusted Domain.

There is something wrong with env. And one more thing - this error isn't listed in the DPM 2010 error codes.
