New 2016 HyperV Host in 2012R2 cluster

    Question

  • Hi All

We are trying to upgrade from 2012R2 hosts to 2016 Hosts. we have taken one host out of cluster (evicted) and installed 2016 Server in its place, we have configured the Host with all settings added fail-over clustering, added hyper V roles etc

Added VMM agent to Host and VMM sees host.

We have tried to use VMM to set the networks logical switches we have etc ) same as other two hosts) but we cannt get VMM to install the logical switches.  if we try installing via HV Mgr then VMM only sees them as standard switches which we cannot convert in VMM.

Any suggestions of getting logical switches into the HOST would be great

    Cheers

  • Thanks For the answers/suggestions.

For your reference we are using SCVMM 2016 with latest versions installed :)

We found the issue that was causing our issue.

The winrm application was only "listening" to it self "localhost -127.0.0.1" once we change this to listen for everything "0.0.0.0" we had no issues configuring and installing the Logical Switches via SCVMM 2016.

We now have one Host updated to Win server 2016 in our cluster - and are planning the other two Hosts upgrade in the following weeks (giving the first, a weeks worth of use to make sure all is good)

    Again thanks for the replies.

  • Hi Sir,

Yes , it is a normal behavior . You can not manage "logical network" for hyper-v host if it is not created by SCVMM.

In addition , I didn't find 2016 hyper-v host is listed in the following article:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn771747(v=sc.12).aspx

I'd suggest you to use SCVMM 2016 to manage 2016 hyper-v hosts.

    Best Regards,

    Elton

  • If your are not using SCVMM 2016 then this will be the problem. You need SCVMM 2016 to support WS 2016 hosts.

If you already are running SCVMM 2016 then please post the error messages you are getting when trying to apply the logical switch.

Can you please provide documentation for this statement "You need SCVMM 2016 to support WS 2016 hosts."
