SC DPM 2012 R2 - List protected files extensions consuming disk space RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone,

We need to know which type of file consume more space in the DPM protections volumes. The purpose is

to list all the protected files and sort them by size, then check which extensions exhaust the storage capacity and eventually exclude it from future backups.

Thus I try to know how is it possible to enumerate the protected data via SQL requests and\or DPM PowerShell ? So far, I did not find any tips to do so.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

  • Hi Radouane!

As far as I know this is unfortunately not possible, you can view which protected server is consuming the most disk space in the DPM console and also on the Disk Utilization report from DPM.

If you are protecting a file server you could probably use PowerShell to list the large files on them,  database files are also usually big.

    Best regards,

    Leon

  • Hi Leon,

First of all, thank you for your reply.

It would be great if it only concerned File Server but we are backuping workstations loads too which make it harder to track.

    Many thanks again Leon.

    regards,
    Radouane

  • I understand, this is indeed more difficult when you also have workstations in the backup.

There is a possibility to exclude certain types of files, most customers just exclude picture, movie, and audio file extensions and that covers most of the undesirable extra files.

If you found this helpful, please mark as answer.

  • Just one more question please, we already are using exclusions so this is not a big deal, but I really want to know if there is any official documentation saying that it's not possible to use the DPM Database to sort the backuped files ?

  • Information about the DPM backups is stored in the SQL database, but the data itself is stored in 'replica' and 'recovery point' volumes on the DPM server.

I haven't unfortunately seen or found any official documentation.
