  • That's a change Microsoft introduced a while back - in order for any user to be an owner of a given group, they need to be a member as well.

  • Hi Srini,

This is the expected behavior when creating an Office 365 group with the New-UnifiedGroup cmdlet.

If you want to create an Office 365 group without the owner being added to the Members list, you can only create the group from UI, via Microsoft 365 admin center > Groups or Microsoft Azure > Groups.

And to remove the owner from the Members list, you need to modify it via the Microsoft 365 admin center or Microsoft Azure as well.

This does not apply to Microsoft Exchange/Exchange admin center.

  • Another questions related to this. Can we create Teams along with Group creation using Powershell ?

  • Hi Srini,

You can use New-Team cmdlet to provision a new Team for use in Microsoft Teams and create an O365 Unified Group to back the team.

However, the group created through Teams cmdlets will not show up in Outlook by default. You can use Set-UnifiedGroup cmdlet to set the parameter HiddenFromExchangeClients to $false.

    To create the new team:

    # Install Microsoft Teams Module
    Install-Module MicrosoftTeams

    # Add MicrosoftTeams Module to the current session
    Import-Module MicrosoftTeams

    # Connect to Microsoft Teams
    $credentials = Get-Credential
    Connect-MicrosoftTeams -Credential $credentials

    # Create a new Team
New-Team -MailNickname "TestTeam" -displayname "Test Teams" -Visibility "private" -owner "johndoe@contoso.com"

    To set the group's parameter:

    # Connect to Exchange Online
    $UserCredential = Get-Credential
    Connect-ExchangeOnline -Credential $UserCredential

    # Unhide the new group from Outlook client
    Set-UnifiedGroup -Identity "Test Teams" -HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled:$false

  • Chelsea, thank you.

Just to be clear i'm looking for a script which creates O365 group along with Teams.

If you go to the Create new O365 group UI page. You can create a Group along with Teams.

  • Hi Srini,

    Thanks for sharing.

Currently, there is no PowerShell cmdlet that creates a new Office 365 team along with Teams arranged from SharePoint side. The only cmdlet available for creating a Teams is New-Team, and using this cmdlet to create a new team using a template is still in preview.
