    When using App V 5 with 2012 r2 RDS is it possible to put shortcuts onto the start screen? I know I can do this with a GPO and exported XML but managing them with App V would be preferable for virtualised apps.

    Nope, not really. App-V creates shortcuts just like 'normal' (desktop) applications, so they don't appear automatically on the start screen
