Unable to open Pdf file stored in document library directly using client application (Adobe reader)

    Question

  • We have a requirement to open pdf file from document library directly using Adobe reader installed in the local machine.
There is a document library which contains lot of pdf files. The users want to open the pdf file in client application ( Adobe reader ) by clicking the menu available at item level. I wanted to check with you whether it is technically feasible . Our client is using O365 Sharepoint online environment.

  • Hi,

It’s not supported to open PDF file in a client application in SharePoint online.

As a workaround, you can open a document library using File Explorer, located in the library ribbon, then open the PDF document from there. You will be prompted to sign into SharePoint, and then you will get the "Checkout and open" prompt from Adobe Reader.

    Thanks,
