  • Hi

Are you protecting clients and servers in your domain or are they in a workgroup?

If they are in an domain (or trusted domain) try this:

    1. Go to the agent on the server/client you want to protect.
    2. Open an elevated DOS prompt.
    3. Go to the BIN catalouge under %systemdrive%\program files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Bin
    4. Run the SetDpmServer -DpmServerName <dpmservername>
    5. On the DPM servern open the DPM PowerShell
    6. Run the Attach-ProductionServer.ps1
    7. Verify that the agent reports ok in the DPM console

    Try this and get back

  • Tejash,

After the Attach-ProductionServer.ps1 are there any errors in the system event log on VMSRVDPM2010? What other roles are installed on VMSRVDPM2010?

If there are no errors in the event log then ensure there is nothing blocking ports or connectivity between the two. Let's test various connectivity between the DPM server and protected server. We'll need to test basic connectivity, SMB, RPC, and WMI/DCOM.

The commands below need to be run from an administrative command prompt. It is a good idea to test from both the DPM server and the protected server. The sccount used should be an administrative account on both servers.

Basic connectivity is tested by using ping. If ICMP traffic is blocked ping commands will fail but that is OK.
      ping <protected server name>

    Next test SMB (file sharing).
      net view \\<protected server name>

Now test RPC and connectivity to Service Control Manager (SCM). This displays a list of services on the remote server when successful.
      Sc \\<protected server name> query

Lastly test WMI/DCOM. When successful this command lists some basic information about the remote server.
Wmic /node:"protected server name" OS list brief

If any of the tests after ping fail that may be where the problem is.

  • Tejash,

Thanks for the response. Would you please run the same commands from the protected server to the DPM server? It seems the needed ports are open from DPM server to protected server. Now we need to test in the other direction.

  • When you get this error "DCOM got error "2147944122" from the computer VMSRVDPM2010.tdd.com when attempting to activate the server: {8BC3F05E-D86B-11D0-A075-00C04FB68820}" that means you got RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE from the Windows Management and Instrumentation DCOM application.

One cause for this is RPC on the DPM server is configured to reject non-preauthenticated client application communications over RPC. See if you have the following registry value on the DPM server.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\RPC\RestrictRemoteClients

If RestrictRemoteClients is present and set to 2 this most likely your issue. If it is not preset, or it is set to 0 or 1, you are fine. If there and 2 then you need to find the whatever is setting it (group policy, etc.) and set it back to 1 (default).
