Recovering a single document that was being edited and is currently checked out RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Word document that was in the process or being edited that needs to be recovered. The file was in the process of being edited for over a week but has not been checked back into the document library.  The file was not open in Word at the time it was lost, but the changes were saved into SharePoint without actually performing the check in.

It seems like the recovery processes only recovers the document history up to the point before the editing began.  Is there a way for me to recover it all including the edit state?

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for the information, unfortunately when you recover SharePoint data, only documents that are checked in, published, or approved are recovered.

The following documents are not recovered:

    • Documents not checked in on the user computer.
    • Documents in either the user computer Recycle Bin or the site collection Recycle Bin.

  • Hello!

Basically how the SharePoint item restore works is that it simply invokes the SharePoint export and import API's, so it is actually SharePoint doing the restore to the destination.

Now SharePoint is not too familiar for me, but I believe since the document has not been checked in, DPM won't be able to get the latest changes due to the fact that the document has not been checked in.

If you know the users that have been editing this specific document, you could try looking in the "My Documents\SharePoint Drafts" folder locally from the users' computers.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • It has been checked out, but not checked back in.  It has been saved without check in.  SharePoint knows about the changes after it has been saved because you go to another system and resume the edit.

  • I meant checked in, corrected my post. How did you perform the restore?

  • I did an item level recovery using a recovery point time where I knew the document was in this saved state.  I recovered the file as the ListItemTitle for the file.  I told the process to use the permissions of the recovery point, not the default.

I recovered to the original site.
