  • Do you know how many maximum number of sessions can I have for remote desktop connection to Windows Server 2012?

  • Performed all of the steps here ... still not working.  When I ran gpupdate it said it was successful.

  • i think you need to explain more.  the GPO change suggested earlier in this post is to allow the same user to have multiple sessions on the same 2012 server.  this behavior is usually disabled by default.

i think what you are asking is how to overcome the maximum RDP connection limit of 2.  the answer for this would be to install the RDS role on the server and purchase remote desktop licenses, this would give you as many connections as you buy licenses for, given your server has the computing resources to handle it.

  • Thanks Armin19,

By default I thought they will be 3 , 2 regular RDP and one admin or something? Do you know?

  • yeah it used to be 3 back in the 2003 days, 1 on the console/admin session and 2 other remote ones but since 2008 it's just 2 because there is no console session anymore:

  • How do I "install the RDS role"?

I want to add a 3rd User connection. I have to buy a license? For every user? I'm already paying for the server rental, Win 2012, SSL certificates etc. I presume there's no extra charge for connecting on weekends or after hours?

There's also "Limit number of connections" in [..Remote Desktop Session Host -> Connections]. What does this do if enabled & set to 3? The description sounds like what I want, but the default is "Not configured" & it was still limited to 2.

  • no limits but it will make lake of resources if the number increases to set it to maximum write 9999

  • Have the remote desktop service role installed and select remote desktop session host feature installed in the server you need multiple logins.

This will allow you to have multiple users and can be restricted through GPO's to a certain number.

NOTE: This is a 120 day (trail) version post which you need to purchase license.
