Connecting windows 7 laptop joined to work homegroup fails to connect to internet outside homegroup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an office Dell laptop running windows 7 professional that is connected to a homegroup at office. when I try to connect the same laptop to my home wifi network (linksys wrt54g2), the laptop connects, network and sharing centre shows connected to internet, but I cannot access the DNS. error msg "windows cannot connect". Ping using works. ping using 14.22.34.XX fails.

    I have tried the following:

    1. disabling the two homegroup related services through services.msc
    2. changing network type through home/work/public
    3. connecting the laptop through a LAN cable to the router

my problem is, even at home, the computer shows it is joined to the work homegroup. in network map, an unknown "switch" is shown. When I try to see the homegroup settings, the next step shows computer not joined to homegroup. what am I missing? My other Win 7 starter netbook connects seamlessly to this network, as do my compaq vista home premium, nokia phones, iphone and other wi-fi enabled devices.

Any solutions? what am I missing?

  • What is the IP address you are getting?

Update the drivers for your NIC and then try.

    Do a ipconfig /flushdns
