Corrupted DOC file RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have several old DOC files stored in my external hard drive. When I try to open them it turns out that all of them are corrupted.

I can recover the text using the built-in utility from Microsoft Office but, is there any way to rocover the original format? I tried several external programs but none of them worked.

One of these files is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eqi01p02l8059lr/110111-AC-PR.doc

I have used Microsoft Office 2007.

I suspect this situation happened when I moved all my files between hard disks a couple of years ago. I ran CHDSK on my current external HD and it seems to be OK.

I would really appreciate your help. These files are really important for my job.

  • Hi,

We can try the methods listed in the following article to recovery the documents:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/87856/en-us

If the methods above not working, I'm afraid we can't get back the original format for the documents.

  • It is a bad sign when Word is unable to open the document at all. :-(

Recreating formatting starting with the plain text is the best you can do, as you have found.

  • Have you tried Open and Repair?

  • Yes, but it doesn't work. The same error appears: http://imgur.com/QFBKFAk

Sorry, it's in Spanish but basically says:
Word found an error while opening the document. Try the following:
    - Check the permissions of the document and the unit
    - Ensure you have enough memory and disk space
    - Open the document with the "Recover Text from Any File" utility

The only option that works is the last one "Recover Text from Any File" but obviously the file loses its format.

I must say that I am using Word 2013 right now and the files were built in Word 2007. Is this important? Should I try to recover the files using the same version?

    Thank you very much.

  • Hello,

I have tried all the methods described but none of them worked to recover the original format of the documents.

I guess I will have to format again the documents.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Best regards.
