Can't hear sound in Windows Media Player 11

Question
-
In fact, I only heard sound once since installing Vista Beta 2, and that was a little audio test for my speakers. Other than that (and yes, I checked all the obvious things, like volume control, drivers, etc), there's no sound. Any suggestions? Anybody else have the same problem?

It's really rather simple..
If you've got a motherboard with built in sound (and who doesn't these days!) and you've got a nicer sound card installed, Windows will load drivers for both but sound will only be coming out of ONE of the two sound systems - the default will ususally be the built in sound device - NOT the sound card.
When you changed the default to your high end card, then it "fixed" it for everything.

Ok, silly question - but can you hear sound anywhere else in Vista? Like when you're starting Vista up (or shutting it down)? Or when you click a link in IE7?
If you type "SOUND" into the search box on the start menu, and launch the Audio Devices and Sound Themes option, and you click on the Sound Events tab, you should see the various events that cause Windows to play a WAV file. Can you hear the various sounds when you click the preview/play button?

Not a silly question at all. I couldn't hear anything, actually. Oddest thing, though. I went into the options menu in WMP11, changed the output for my sound, and viola, I have sound throughout the entire computer. It's really weird, and I didn't expect it to fix everything but Windows Media Player, but whatever. Thanks anywho.Tuesday, June 27, 2006 4:01 AM

I am think the problem maybe related to Audio driver.
YOu can reference here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/925901MS changed a lot on the Audio interface in Vista.

I recently updated my media player to 11. Everything was fine when I first made the up dates. Now I actually have the opposite problem as the previous inquiries. My sound is OK but the video doesn't keep up. Video plays really slow and choppy, then a few seconds after audio is done video jumps to the end. Do you have any suggestions.Sunday, June 17, 2007 3:11 PM

All video format files got the problem or specific video format got the problem?
For video play back problem, incorrect codec can be a source of problem.

Hi.
Have you tried to check if your IDE controller stands on DMA mode and not PIO mode?
You can check this in device manager and under ide ata/atapi controllers. check all of them to be sertain that you choose the right one.
right click and then properties and there should be a tab for advanced settings.

Hi. I can hear all the sounds - Winamp, Vista, etc. but it's only the Windows Media Player and Media Center that don't play any sound. When a song starts, you hear that low "thump" but that's about it. I recently installed Winamp and CCleaner and messed up with the startup programs. Might that have something to do with it?
Thanks.Friday, August 31, 2007 6:52 AM -
In Media Player 11 there is a SYNC tab click on that and then go to more options.. and then devices.
In devices go to sound click on properties and change your audio device to use.
Usually it is set to DEFAULT change it to another device below it and see if that works.

GIVE ME A EASY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM
Saturday, May 10, 2008 6:02 PM -
go into device manager -scroll down to sound, video & game controllers. start to dissable, one at a time,( process of elemination), your sound devices, while keeping open wmp 11, so you can test each dissabled item. for me it was,- sigma tel high definition audio codec, once dissabled i got my sound back and i am once again shaken the walls, hope this helps, good luck, john u.Sunday, June 22, 2008 11:57 PM

I had the same problem with Windows Vista 64 bit, no sound in windows media player 11. I had installed the divx 7 codec (which isnt supposed to work in 64 bit vista). I had video but no sound.
I downloaded the Windows essentials media codec pack, and then I had sound.

I also downloaded Windows Essentials Media Codec Pack and this solved the same issue where Windows Media Player previously had no sound
This is the only fix which works - dont bother downloading anything else

My computer plays sounds, but nothing comes out of my spearkers. I changed speakers and tested speakers on another computer, speakers are fine but they will not play on this computer, using window vista. they were working a while back and now nothing.
I have tried the above (http://www.download.com/Windows-Essentials-Media-Codec-Pack/3000-2140_4-10662709.html?tag=mncol;pop&cdlPid=10662710) it did not work.
I tried several other suggestions from this forum, most don't make any sense to me because when following the description, there is always something missing like go to Device manager/sound; the only choice I have is High definition audio device and inside that there is no choice to change except for disable which I did. and it stopped my sound completely. I enabled and can hear sounds from my computer only. It also has update driver and I did, it says no new update. also when I open in General tab, it says this device is working properly.
it's been months I have tried to figure this out and nothing.
I have also tried WLOC full scan and it will not work on my computer, it always freezes up, long ago it gave me an error-can't remember what error was.
Can someone help, I am sooooo lost!
thank youThursday, July 9, 2009 9:03 PM -
I feel you, I felt that way also. What I did is went back to the beginning as someone told me and boy did I feel stupid after that everything started working computer , truck and car,Saturday, July 11, 2009 7:48 PM
-
What do you mean "went back to the beginning"? I did everything in this forum and nothing worked. Are you just laughing at me? lol, my trucks work just fine, I'm a better mechanic than a computer buff. And my plumbing works too, no problems fixing that. I refuse to feel stupid though-DaXn computers are just too much too learn.
Well thanks anyhow for the sentiment, feeling my pain!Monday, July 13, 2009 2:53 AM -
I installed the codec pack found in http://www.download.com/Windows-Essentials-Media-Codec-Pack/3000-2140_4-10662709.html?tag=mncol;pop&cdlPid=10662710 and it worked perfectly. I allowed it to install everything there, and it contains a repair tool that asked to remove a bunch of codecs it said were invalid. I allowed their removal, and now I have sound.
Thanks guys, that was driving me NUTS!Monday, January 4, 2010 2:32 AM -
I know this is an old thread, but turning off SRS WOW effects succeeded where installing all those driver packs failed.Tuesday, May 31, 2011 6:34 PM
