Domain Bound non AD intergrated Standlone DNS Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a standalone DNS server that I am looking to bind to domain without integrating it with AD.  This is an external facing DNS server, all of our internal facing DNS servers are AD integrated.  This is our current environment that we are looking to keep but hoping to be able to bind external DNS to domain to allow us better manageably.

Currently running external DNS on windows server 2008 r2 but ready to move to windows server 2019.  Hoping to take care of the upgrade and binding to Domain at the same time to reduce down time.

If there is a way what are the necessary steps and possible pitfalls if any?

  • Hi,

What does it mean that bind to domain?

It is OK to configure non AD-integrated DNS on a domain joined server.

The difference between AD-integrated DNS and standalone DNS is that the DNS database of AD-integrated will be replicated with AD replication.
