DPM 2007 backups fail for one server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a DPM 2007 server called DPM-01 running Windows 2008 server that backs up the following 3 servers:

    EX-01

    FS-01

    APP-01

Both EX-01 and FS-01 backup without error so we can ignore those.  However the backups for APP-01 started failing 3 days ago, prior to that they had been working for months.

APP-01 is a Windows Server 2003 R2 enterprised edition with service pack 2.  We are backing up files, system state and SQL databases on that server

We have reboot both the APP-01 and the DPM-01 servers.  After the reboot of APP-01 a few databases seemed to go green and show an "OK" symbol last Friday, however over the weekend their backups failed too.  The protection status for this server included the following:

    "Recovery point creation failed"

    "unable to configure protection"

    "replica is inconsistent"

When we try to run a consistency check or create a new recovery point the job starts in the Monitoring tab but no data is transferred and the job never completes (even after 60 hours).

In the Management tab the agent status for APP-01 is OK and the agent version is 2.0.8864.0.  There is no throttling set for the connection to the agent.

At the end of this message I have posted two  of the alerts we see in the event log on the DPM-01 DPM server.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information,

    Thanks

  • Hi

In your error logs its stated that your agent is in a unexpected state. On ACH-DC-APP-01 server, open a elevated command prompt and type vssadmin list writers. This command will list all you VSS Writers running on your operating system. It's the VSS'es that DPM uses to backup different workloads like Exchange,File, SQL etc. If any of your VSS writers isn't in a stable state DPM will be unable to snapshot your data.

If youre VSS'es is all in a stable state and your backup is still failing, please verify your local windows application and system log on ACH-DC-APP-01 server.
