Resetting windows password on encrypted disk (BitLocker) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does someone know if and how I can reset (crack) a win8 password on an encrypted (BitLocker) system? I do remember the Bitlocker password, but have forgotten the windows login password.

  • Hi Myriz,

Based on your description, the main issue is windows login password is lost, right?
First of all, this issue is not related to BitLocker, just like what ZigZag3143x said we cannot help you with "cracking" a windows password.
But here is something we can do it for you.

If it is a local account, you could logon with another administrator account then reset it. If you have no another administrator account in the system, we cannot reset it.
If it is a domain user account, we need ask domain administrator for help, domain administrator can reset your password.
If you're using a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online.
Please refer to the following link to reset your password.

If you've tried these suggestions and still can't sign in, I am afraid that you'll need to reinstall Windows.

    Best regards

  • The simple answer is: Use the utilman.exe trick.

    https://www.technibble.com/bypass-windows-logons-utilman/

The catch is, that before you can access the disk in order to perform that trick, you need to unlock bitlocker. That can be done from the command line using manage-bde.exe -unlock x: (x: being your windows drive seen from windows setup).

It is easy for me, but might seem complicated for you - please ask for help if you need further assistance.

  • How can that work?  You still need admin password to unlock Bitlocker.

  • How can what work? Please tell us what you are referring to.

On WinPE, you don't need administrative permissions, but just the recovery key.

  • Hi,

Command lines will help reset Windows login password on BitLocker encrypted disk, though the process is a bit cumbersome.

First of all, you have to bring up a Command Prompt window by booting your computer from a Windows installation media and then use the command lines to unlock and decrypt the BitLocker encrypted system drive. For more details about the unlock commands, refer to this page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/manage-bde-unlock.

After the BitLocker encrypted disk is decrypted, you can reset your Windows login password with the utilman.exe trick.

To sum up, what you need is a Windows installation media and several command lines. Here is a detailed tutorial: https://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/reset-windows-10-local-admin-password-with-bitlocker-enabled.html.
