  • Hi,

What type of MS Edge build version are you using?

I suggest to you to use the Official build version instead of DEV or beta channel version:

    To download it:

  • Open the MS Edge, type CTRL + O and browse your PDF file, It works?

    Try to reset the settings:

    1. Access to the following link: edge://settings/reset
    2. Reset the settings:

  • It may be a compatibility issue with the new Edge and Sharepoint.

    Try the following solution:

If the problem persists, I think you have to open new thread in SharePoint TechNet forum.

  • I think, you don't understand my problem, I can open normal pdf file in Edge Chromium, it works but it doesn't work when I click link which looks like this
    file:///Y:/document.pdf
IE 11 opens this link without problem.

  • Try to repair MS Edge Chromium and test again.

The problem is when you click on hyper-text link or also if you copy/paste the link into the browser?

  • When I click hyper-text link nothing happens, when I copy/paste link into the browser there is information in address bar #blocked.

Like I mentioned, these problems no exist in IE 11, there everything works fine.

  • Can you take a screenshot of the error message and upload it in another web site and share the link here?

    Try the following:

    1. Repair the Microsoft Edge browser:
    2. Go to Settings, Default Apps and reset the default settings:

  • Hi,

when I click hyper-text link with right-mouse button and click Open link in new tab I get information in a browser address bar: about:blank#blocked

    Wednesday, February 5, 2020 8:36 AM
  • Hi,

    about:blank#blocked

There is a policy that blocks the MS Edge to open the PDF file, maybe a GPO or something like this.

If your PC is managed by administrators, you have to ask to their to check the policies applied to your machine.

  • but IE opens without problems, so there is no policy that could block this action.

  • Maybe you have policies applied  just for Microsoft Edge browser, It's possible to do that.

  • maybe you know what Microsoft Edge Policies can block opening pdf links?
    Friday, February 7, 2020 8:11 AM
  • There is a multiple ways to do this.

Why not ask to your administrators if there is a policy (GPO, Intune or other devices management tool) that blocks you?

  • We have exactly the same problem, many of our links are not working in Edge Chromium (Stable, not Beta!).

According to everything I found so far, Edge Chromium same as Chrome block file:// links automatically.

But since so few seem to know about this even in the technet forums there may not be an official statement. If we find out how to solve this I will update the post.

This is very unfortunate since we hoped Edge Chromium would be the solution for us to get rid of the old IE - with Edge not being supported by some web applications we still had both Browsers running in our environment...

  • We are experiencing this exact same issue with Sharepoint.  Works fine in IE11, links direct to file://link.pdf  Same results in Google Chrome.

Others in our organization are able to click on the sites and open them successfully using Edge 44.17763.831.0 2018   Not Chromium Edge

If I open in IE11 and right click the link and choose Open in Edge -
it works opens the file and displays in Edge Chromium

In Edge Chromium right click Copy Link and past in new tab in Edge Chromium works.

Neither of these are solutions only informational. We need to discontinue IE11.

Have reported the problem to our administrators, without reply yet.
