SC 2012 DPM - BMR vs P2V RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there!

Can I use SC 2012 DPM's bare metal recovery in order to backup data of the physical server and restore it on the VM, provided that I have correct amount of disks with enough space on them (amount of disk space is more than on the source server)? What is batter to use in that situation: BMR or P2V?

    Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi

This should work without any problems. The only requirement (with DPM 2010, possibly the same with DPM 2012) is that the recovery target machine should have the more or less the same disk resources to recover than the backed-up machine disks. It should also have same CPU type as the backed-up server.

You might encounter a blue screen if the hardware architecture is different.

  • Hi Jennifer2b2

The DPM BMR senario is not supported since the VM would be considered different hardware, however see the following article.
