WildCard Search In Fast Search for SharePoint 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I want to perform wildcard search in fs4sp. When I search using "*" as prefix or suffix, I am able to get desired results. But when I expect using "?" in the search keyword to subsitute a single character for my search, I do not get any results. Is there anything important that I am missing? Please guide me.

    Thanks

  • Hello Rahul,

Using ? as a wildcard via the Search Page in SharePoint is not supported. The character will be stripped away when the query is converted to FAST syntax on the FS4SP farm.

A query like "te?t" will be rewritten as "te t", with a space, and "tes?" will be merely "tes". The same is true for using *  at the beginning or in the middle of a word, it will also be stripped away.

If you however execute your searches via one of the Query API's, writing FQL, they will work. Enabling FQL in a Core Result Webpart requires some trickery, but it's possible. Take a look at: http://neganov.blogspot.com/2011/01/extending-coreresultswebpart-to-handle.html
