Reassign a Task to another resource RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using Project Pro 2010 and Project Server 2010.  I was told that reassigning tasks to a new resource through Project Pro can cause an error message when team members access My Work in the PWA.  What is the best practice for changing the resource on a task?  Do you just switch the resource under the resource names column in Project Pro 2010, or do you reassign through the PWA?  If the best way is through the PWA can I as the admin. do it or do  I have the current resource do it  in My Work and send to the PM for approval?

Whoever told you not to reassign tasks to a new resource in Project Professional is sadly mistaken.  Out of curiosity, what type of error message does this user claim team members will see?  Anyway, a best practice I recommend for replacing the current resource is to do the following:
      • Select the task in question.
      • Click the Resource tab to display the Resource ribbon and then click the Assign Resources button.
      • In the Assign Resources dialog, select the resource currently assigned to the task and then click the Replace button.
      • In the Replace Resource dialog, select the new resource and then click the OK button.
      • Click the Close button to close the Assign Resources dialog.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks Dale.  The error we were seeing was the "unknown error has occured" when they clicked on "My Work".  The person said it was happening because of re-assigning tasks to a new resource.  The error fixed itself within a couple days (not sure why)

The person is in error.  Like you, I am clueless about what caused the error, and how the error managed to resolve itself.  :)
