Using SQL Server 2012 Express to install Project Server 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

Can we install PS 2013 using SQL 2012 Express? Couldn't found anything about it, MS document says 2008 R2 Express can be used for PS 2013.

    Thanks

  • You also do not get SQL Analysis services with the Express edition so no Cube. They probably haven't mentioned it because the SharePoint 2013 installer installs SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition. The page you are looking at are the hardware requirements for Project Server 2013 - they probably assume you are doing a farm install rather than the stand alone computer install.

  • Hello,

I have never tried so I don't know of any reason why SQL Server 2012 Express edition can't be used, you would need to install SQL Server 2012 Express edition first as the SharePoint 2013 installer would install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express version. Just note the limitations of SQL Server 2012 / 2008 R2 Express though.

  • Thanks for the reply.

Even I can't find any reason, but why MS have not mentioned about it here. The only thing that seems to be of consideration is the size, it supports 10GB but that isn't an issue for testing. I'll give it a try and do share the feedback.

  • Final verdict... Paul you're right, apart from size limitation it does not have SQL Analysis. I've installed on SQL 2012 Express and things are working fine so far :)

    Thanks
