Windows XP SP3 - anti-virus software?

    Question

  • I am about to buy a used computer that has SP3 and has no anti-virus software installed. I just lost my laptop due to viruses and I am not sure what to do as far as downloading anti-vrus software.

    1. Won't the fact that I get on the internet to download it open it to viruses? What should I do? Should I buy the software, download it, then go to the internet?

    2.  Is there any anti-virus protection in SP3?  Do I need to get anti-virus software?

I'll take all the help I can get!

    Thanks

  • Yes you should have an anti-virus program in place. Yes you will be vulnerable for a few minutes while you download an anti-virus program but it's a necessary evil. AVG seems to be a popular choice and if you go to http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition as soon as you sign on to the net and download it then disconnect from the net while you install it, you should be okay. Once you get the AVG in place then you should download Windows Defender to help protect against malware. Then you can start checking out other security options to help protect you while surfing the net.

No, there is no anti-virus protection in SP3

  • I would personally go for Microsoft security essentials as my top choice.

If that doesn't work. There is avast (copy the link below into your browser).

    https://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

I personally put this on my old laptop that is running xp and it functions quite well as a anti virus software.

Also make sure firewall is turned on for optimal protection

Also a virus software is only needed if you plan to do internet related functions like checking email or browsing on various sites
