Hyper-V Management service crashing on Windows 2016 TP5 while importing virtual machine from SMB3 share RRS feed

  • Question

  • While importing a virtual machine through 'HyperV manager', it fails with error "Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location '\\192.168.15.172\SMB3Share\SMB3Share\'.The operation on computer 'CSBHYPERV3' failed: Shutting down" and then 'HyperV management service' crashes.

Also in the event logs the following event is logged

The same behavior is noted when trying to import VM using the import-vm PowerShell command.

Is it a known issue in Windows 2016 TP5?

Let me know if more information is required.

    Thanks

  • Will add copying the VHDX file manually and create a new vm around that disk file worked fine.

  • Hi Zhoomar,

    >>Is it a known issue in Windows 2016 TP5?

I'm afraid I could not find official document about the issue. Is the host granted permission on the share?

Restart VMM service and try again.

Have you tried to import VMs on local storage?

    Best Regards,

    Leo

  • I do not get the VM service crash but I cannot import from Linux share. This is a Hyper-V core server managed from a Windows 10 workstation.

Importing the same export from local storage works.

  • Hi Leo,

    Thanks for the response.

    >>I'm afraid I could not find official document about the issue. Is the host granted permission on the share?

Yes all the required permission are correct. Also we can take VSS backup of the VM on the same SMB3 share.

    >>Restart VMM service and try again.

Restarting the service does not help. It again crashed with the same error.

    >>Have you tried to import VMs on local storage?

    Yes it works fine.

  • Hi Zhoomar,

As the official release of Server 2016 would be launched recently, we could wait to see if the issue was solved.

    Best Regards,

    Leo
