I have a windows xp machine w/ dual core processor 512 mb of ram. How can i upgrade to windows 7.

You should run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx.
Note that there is no direct upgrade from XP to Win7, you will have to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs.- Proposed as answer by Steve SchiemannMicrosoft employee Monday, August 24, 2009 8:24 PM

Hi customer,
According to my experience, it is not allowed to upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows XP directly and you need clean install the new system on another partition. As to the data transfer, you should use the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate user files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7.
