Win 10 Enterprise x64 Fall Creators Update (16299.15) - No LAN, No Wireless, No Audio on Lenovo Thinkpad X250 RRS feed

  • Question

  • hello. This is a case I opened with Lenovo support, and answer was - call sysadmin (this is me...) and go to Microsoft (this is here, I hope):

windows 10 enterprise x64 fall creators update (build 16299.15) has following problems:
    - build-in Ethernet (intel i218-lm (3)) shows no connection in OS and no network (cable is present and NIC LEDs are active).
    - wireless adapter (intel dual band wireless-ac 7265) does not see wireless networks.
    - audio device is absent. in device manager only high definition audio controller [pci bus 0, device 27] has problem (device cannot start. code 10).
all these happened after installing build 16299.15 on top of latest regular win10ent x64 version, also this is happened on clean install of insider preview build 16296 from iso and upgrading to build 16299.15.
i tested build 16299.15 with default drivers from ms windows update, i did install all drivers from lenovo site with system update tool. nothing helps.
there is one solution for wired lan - after installing full set of intel's drivers, running diagnostic on network adapter fix connection problem until next reboot.

  • Hi,

Based on Lenovo official document, it states that ThinkPad X250 have been tested for upgrade to Windows 10 Oct Update version 1709 from initial Windows 10 launch(vesion 1703)Windows 10 launch (build 10240), Windows 10 November Update version 1511 (build 10586) or  Windows 10 Update July 2016 Update version 1607 (build 14393) .

Lenovo  devices tested for Windows 10 version 1709 (Oct, 2017)

    https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht505322

Thus it should be your driver or hardware itself issue.

Windows 10, version 1709 (also known as the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update) will be available worldwide on October 17th, 2017.

Please use the official ISO to do Clean install (not In-Place upgrade )and then update all of your device driver to do a test.

If the issue persist, give us a screenshot your device management's wired and wireless network card status.

  • Hi. After I switch off Secure Boot + UEFI Boot only mode, and set Legacy Boot mode all problems disappeared.

If I turn back Secure boot and UEFI Boot, then I got them back. So, it looks to me like hardware init problem, since running Wired Intel's LAN selftest can recover Ethernet controller until next reboot.

    Currently I'm running build 16299.19 and BIOS v 1.27 (N10ET48W).

Problem happened when I did upgrade to build 16299.15. So who to blame I do not know, may be Microsoft change something, or it is Lenovo bug.

P.S. from the moment of X250 purchase I was running Secure boot + Bitlocker and NEVER had any problems with any Windows 10 update. More to that, no problems rolling back from 16299.15 to my working build 15063.674 (even Bitlocker does not ask recovery pass :) ). Currently I'm running "clean" install (from ISO 16296 ->16299.15->16299.19) without Secure boot and waiting for solution.

  • Hi Vladimir,

Shall you give us a screenshot of your device management in order to know what's status of your network adapter and audio card?

Did all of your Lenovo laptop have this issue?

  • I was asked by Lenovo L2 support to provide MSInfo diag files. I did two saves - with secure boot on and off. there is a difference between them. I can send them to you. Currently only my notebook was upgraded to 1709. Before we sort it out I'm afraid to approve 1709 in our office. We have many Lenovo notebooks, and all new models use secure boot.

P.S. Btw I was told, what Lenovo's "tested with Fall Creators Update" does not equals "supported". My case in Lenovo was closed, because I used Insiders build.

P.P.S. With Secure Boot On,  In device manager both LAN and Wi-Fi are perfectly OK. Audio device (Realtek High Definition Audio) is absent. Instead I have one of two High Definition Audio Controller with ! mark. Second entry are ok.
    Secure Boot On.

  • I have also upgraded my Lenovo Yoga X1 (Gen1) to Windows 10 - 1709, and Intel ME and Intel Wireless AC 8260 drivers are not working. I have tried to downgrade, rollback, upgrade, reinstall apps and drivers, no any progress.

I am not allowed to turn Secure Boot / EUFI off, so I can not test.

    Other things work fine.

Regarding the Wireless, it has Event log messages:

5032 - Driver Miniport reset watchdog

  • Yes. This settings was a problem. I recently "tuned up" bitlocker policy in our domain and turned it on. After set it to unconfigured state in domain policy, I turned on secure boot and all is fine! Thanks!

  • #MeToo !

i will open now a Ticket

We searched already on 1703 with Lenovos TX70 Series, the WiFi is implemented as PCI-Express and so DMA capable.

And so the device is not enabled bevor someone is logging on, after logging on, PNP for DMA Devices is working and Wifi Device is existing.

After upgrading to 1709, this enabling of PNP DMA devices after logging on is not longer working.

Also HP X360 or G4's having Problems, they will never boot up after 1709, enabled Bitlocker with enabled DisableExternalDMAUnderLock

Everything is related to this GPO.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PnP\Pci
    DisableExternalDMAUnderLock (DWORD) = 1

You can finde more at this Link from Sami Laiho

    http://blog.win-fu.com/2017/02/the-true-story-of-windows-10-and-dma.html

This setting makes definitely sense to protect your Bitlocker encrypted Disks from Data loss in case of an DMA Attack.

But MS messed something up in 1709 with this Security feature.

    Paul
