Migration from shares to sharepoint RRS feed

  • Question

  • What kind of issues would an auditor / security admin be interested in when a company starts storing files in sharepoint when it previously resided on windows server file shares. What can go wrong, what issues need considering?

  • That's going to depend on the size of the file shares you're migrating.  You'll need to consider things such as access and permissions, enforcing the policy to ensure the document libraries are used etc, user education.  There are various third party tools which can assist you in what can be a huge task.

The first consideration I would be tackling, is how much of it needs to be migrated.  There's a lot of information on most file shares that has never been accessed for years.  It's worth an exercise to get any information like that archived rather than move it to a document library where it's never going to be looked at either.
